About Joaquin:
Joaquin grew up in East Vancouver and Burnaby. Whilst there he was tutored by kindly Franciscan monks in the art of baroque keyboard practice, working through Bach's Well Tempered Clavier by the time he finished high school. During university he studied Classical Greek and Latin, and spent his summers working at archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.
After graduation, he travelled extensively, and on one of these epic trips managed to cross the entire width of the Sahara in a deux chevaux, whilst documenting the entire trip in a series of drawings and water colours. He has travelled to the furthest point North of Canada to the furthest tip of South America, all over Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Aside from his archaeological adventures, he is a founding member of the Winter Harp Ensemble, which has been nominated for various awards, including the West Coast Music award. The ensemble's recordings get regular airplay, and several of his compositions have been used for film and television.
Aside from his work in music, he is also a prolific writer, and has won several awards for his publications. His interest in archaeology eventually led to an interest in heritage preservation, and he is a past winner of B.C.'s most prestigious award from the BC Heritage Foundation for outstanding achievement in Heritage Conservation.
In terms of boats, he is the proud owner of a very rare Boston Whaler sailboat, as well as several other unusal examples of Boston Whalers. He has a keen interest in the technical design and construction of boats, and puts this knowledge to the test every year at the Nanaimo International Bathtub race.
Joaquin joined the M&P Team in 2000 as the Service Manager, and continues to assist customers in getting back out on the water quickly as well as pursuing his other interests. When not sailing, hiking, or long distance cycling, he likes to relax by painting Impressionist seascapes in oil.
